We are starting our Tot School back up again, and I feel like I have a better plan this time around. I found a great website, and we are using all her themes and ideas linked with some letter activities and crafts I am planning.
It is a wonderful site http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/joyful_learning.html and the themes are for 2 year olds. We started it late so we jumped into the Camping Theme this week. She usually does the theme twice a week, but I combined 2 weeks into one and did them all in one week, so I could try to get on her Sept. schedule.
We set up the camping tent in the family room and had a fun and exciting week. He wanted to be in the tent pretty much every minute of the day if we were home.
For every A word I had him color a page with that A word on it. I printed them free from the internet.
Day 1: Camping Theme and Letter A is for ANIMALS
READ: Bailey Goes Camping by: Kevin Hekes
We read books in the tent and made craft binoculars out of toilet paper rolls.
We searched for animals we would see if we went camping and collected objects we would need to go camping.
We went swimming.
We sang camp songs too.
Day 2: Camping Theme and Letter A is for ANT
READ: When We Go Camping by: Margriet Ruurs
ACTIVITIES/CRAFTS: We went outside and collected nature items in our bucket (leaves, flowers, sticks, seeds, and made a nature wreath.
We watched ANTS at work in their ant mounds. We have way too many of these in our yard.
Day 3: Camping Theme and Letter A is for AMBULANCE & ALLIGATORS
READ: Owl Babies by: Martin Waddell
ACTIVITIES/CRAFTS: Go to the Zoo and look for animals we would see camping, look at the owls, bears, fish, etc.
We made an owl puppet and I got the template at http://www.dltk-kids.com/animals/mbagowl.htm
We even saw an ambulance on our way home.
FOOD: We had a camping dinner. We ate hot dogs, carrots and mac and cheese.
Day 4: Camping Theme and Letter A is for APPLE
ACTIVITY/CRAFT: We made apple prints on paper and sang apple songs. Like “Apples and Bananas”
SING: We sang camp songs in the tent while I played the guitar.
Day 5: Camping Theme and Letter A is for AIRPLANE
READ: Going on a Bear Hunt by: Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury
ACTIVITY/CRAFTS: Hide Bears and go on a pretend bear hunt, airplane puzzle, and make a nature rubbing (we collected leaves and put them under our paper and colored the patterns).
SING: Going on a Bear Hunt
Over the weekend, we went to a friend’s lakehouse and swam in the lake. Perfect for our camping theme!
Our favorite song of the week was:
A-Camping We Will Go… – Sung to “The Farmer in the Dell”
A-camping we will go,
A-camping we will go,
Heigh-ho, off we go,
A-camping we will go.
